Tell us about your experience with SHRM Topeka.

I found the experience to be not only enjoyable but also informative and inspiring. I particularly appreciate the network of professionals and the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from different organizations.

How long have you been working in HR?

I have been working in HR for about seven years.

What resources do you use to stay up-to-date on HR news and trends?

SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) is one of my favorites and most comprehensive resources. I also use HR Dive, it’s a digital news publication the focuses on covering the latest HR development. Lastly, LinkedIn has been a valuable resource for connecting with other HR professionals and discovering new trends and ideas.

What professional accomplishment are you the most proud of?

I am most proud of the growth of the HR professionals I work with and supervise. I worked hard to implement reward and talent management strategies that support achieving department goals and objectives.

What advice do you have for someone new to the HR field?

The first thing I tell every new HR professional that has started in my department is, "Get comfortable being uncomfortable." I also ask them to learn about the Leaders/stockholders because, to me, to be effective in HR, it's essential to understand the Leaders/stockholders you are supporting. They should be proactive and take action immediately. I would tell them to be ethical because we, as HR professionals, are entrusted with sensitive information and play a critical role in promoting fairness and equity in the workplace. Finally, be empathetic. HR is a people-focused role, and empathy is a key trait for success in the field.

Why should local HR professionals get involved in SHRM Topeka?

It gives you a professional network to help with career growth and development. You have access to job opportunities and many other professionals to share knowledge with. SHRM Topeka also gives back to the community and helps support other HR professionals in our area.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy bike riding, working out, watching, and playing sports, and grilling.

What's one thing you love about Topeka?

I enjoy the bike and walking trails around the city.
