Tell us about your experience with SHRM Topeka.
I have always attended the Kansas SHRM conferences and on occasion the SHRM Topeka meetings. When I saw an opening for the Director of College Relations, I decided to join the SHRM Topeka Board. I have served in this capacity for a year and a half. It's been great getting to know everyone on the Board, meeting new members and providing input.
How long have you been working in HR?
In 2003, I worked for about two and a half years as a Career Development Manager with Prairie Band Casino & Resort. I obtained my MBA and decided to explore management in Marketing, Planning & Analysis and returned to HR as the Director of Human Resources. In this capacity, I have loved learning and growing. I am someone who embraces change.
What resources do you use to stay up-to-date on HR news and trends?
SHRM emails and conferences, including local, state and national. National Native American Human Resource Association (NNAHRA) emails and conferences. I also love to network.
What professional accomplishment are you the most proud of?
I first took the SPHR and passed in 2016. I thought I never wanted to take another test that hard ever again. Two years later, I felt that I would like to obtain my SHRM-SCP because of the additional community that SHRM offered. In addition to the learning and knowledge required to study, you also get additional benefits at the National Conference by receiving a special invite to the Certification Lounge. In addition with being part of the SHRM Topeka Board, there is a special invite to the Volunteer Lounge, which serves dinner, snacks and a relaxation area.
What advice do you have for someone new to the HR field?
Learn as much as you can, always be open to learning. The best thing you can do is be enthusiastic and excited every day.
Why should local HR professionals get involved in SHRM Topeka?
Being part of SHRM Topeka gets you out of your shell and your comfort-zone. Also it allows for more community involvement.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I am a huge Game of Thrones fan, so I am watching House of the Dragon now. Other than that I like to read books, however, I haven't had too much time lately.
What's one thing you love about Topeka?
How when you become intentional about meeting people, you run into someone you know more frequently. I love the vibe that is going on with the Greater Topeka Partnership.
